John W. Herrera, general manager of Magic Valley Electric Cooperative in Mercedes, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of Texas Electric Cooperatives (TEC). The statewide organization serves 74 electric cooperatives in Texas. Herrera was elected by the board for a one-year term during the general meeting held August 8 at TEC's 66th Annual Membership Meeting in San Antonio.
"I am honored that the board of Texas Electric Cooperatives has chosen me to serve as chairman for the next year," Herrera said. "During this challenging time for the electric industry, it is essential for cooperatives to work together to keep energy costs down and to get the most from our resources."
Herrera graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982. He worked in engineering positions with Houston Lighting and Power and the Public Utilities Board of Brownsville before accepting the position of operations manager at Magic Valley EC in 1997. In 2002, he was named general manager of Magic Valley EC, the third largest electric distribution cooperative in Texas.
He and his wife, Pilar, have two children, John Lawrence, 18, and Laura Pilar, 16.
Magic Valley Electric Cooperative serves 77,682 connected meters in portions of Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, Willacy and Kenedy counties.
