Magic Valley held its 71st Annual Meeting on April 14th at the Catholic War Veterans Hall in Weslaco with 700 members in attendance to learn more about their member-owned electric utility. Since 1937 MVEC has been providing their members with safe, reliable electricity. MVEC has grown with the Valley and changed with the times. This year’s theme focused on cooperatives working with cooperatives.
In their respective reports, President Garcia and General Manager Herrera addressed the issues currently affecting the cooperative, mainly by the rising price of fuel, both for electric generation and operating costs.
In the future, the electricity delivered by Magic Valley Electric will come from several sources including; natural gas, coal, lignite, hydro and wind. More than one-third of MVEC’s members now have automated meter-reading devices installed. These units can be read remotely, saving time, labor and fuel costs to the cooperative. MVEC addressed that it is actively working to lower costs.
